An easy to use book with an added video tutorial,
This review is from: Photoshop CS6: Visual Quickstart Guide (Visual QuickStart Guides) (Paperback)
This is a very well constructed package and one that offers excellent value.
The Visual Quickstart series is well-established and was originally created both for those programming with HTML and some of the modern languages such as Java. It was also widely used to present guides to Microsoft Office and the major individual programs within such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint but not initially for Photoshop.
The books tend to follow a similar style but this is slightly different in that it has rather more illustrations than is usually evidenced. The book is divided into a great many chapters and most chapters are broken down into a series of 'follow me' exercises which each look at a different aspect of the program's facilities. The final chapter looks at the program's preferences and explains how most should be set and explains their options. This is quite unusual and, for many users, may alone be worth the price of the book's purchase. The book is easy to use as it is so sectionalised and you could pick and mix amongst its contents, should that suit your needs.
The main body of the book is presented in dual column format, other than the very extensive Index which is presented in 3-column format. For a book of 400-plus pages, this is one of the largest Indexes seen.
The authors are not familiar names to me but, from those sections read to date, they are clearly writing through practical experience gained over a number of years of extensive use. As the style of writing is primarily instructional, it is difficult to gain an impression of the writers' personalities or whom may have written which sections, not that it is too relevant. It is not a text-heavy book and the instructions, where they exist, are generally short and to-the-point. The more textual content, which is relatively little overall, is more open.
Very complete in content, it will for many be the only book on Photoshop CS6 that they will ever need. The video tutorial and an e-book version of this book which you can read on a portable device, both of which are on disk, add value. The majority of images used in the book are also available for download by logging in to the publisher's book page as given within which will help with the exercises.
