Not the best Godzilla film,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This film had some really good moments, but was a bit cheesy in parts, and the ending seemed a bit weak.
The subtitles seemed a bit, well, childish at times. I don't know if they were subtitles to the original film script, or subtitles to the American dub.
There were many long glances and prolonged pauses for dramatic effect when the politicians had to make decisions. It felt like a Hollywood film made for kids.
The opening scenes showed promise, but it never got off the ground. Using their anti-monster weapons, the Anti-Megalosaurus guys manage to pee Godzilla off so that he stomps back to the ocean. During the effort though a man is killed and a female Ace is blamed.
The Kiryu project begins and the Mechagodzilla is constructed, Akane (the female Ace) is the lead pilot in the project (Mechagodzilla is given a lift - quite literally - to where he is needed via aeroplane) and she is working alongside the brother of the man who was killed earlier in the film. The brother blames her and makes that clear.
There is a sub plot involving one of the main scientists and his daughter Sara. Sara provides a lot of the moral questions surrounding the Kiryu project.
Anyway - eventually Mechagodzilla manages to chase Godzilla back into the sea and everyone is happy (they obviously haven't thought that he could just as easily turn round).
There were redeeming factors though, the Mechagodzilla was the best Mecha yet, and the views of the original Godzilla skeleton were impressive.
In this film, the previous Godzillas were different Godzillas rather than the same one - they use some footage from the original Gojira film with some modern made footage designed to look old, which shows the original Godzilla disolving.
The Mechagodzilla's special weapon (the Absolute Zero ray) is a fantastic weapon, and on the few occasions you see it used, it is accompanied by some corking visuals.
This isn't a rubbish film, I still enjoyed it, it just didn't live up to expectations. The people in the film didn't seem that phased by a huge lizard, I know I would be!!!
