Good if u havent read the books,
This review is from: Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant [DVD] (DVD)
The darren shan books are part of a series of twelve which tell the story of an ordinary teenage boy who becomes a vampire in order to save his friend from death. The books, which have on many awards, are brilliant and i recommend them. The film is a typical modern book adaptation that doesn't stick to the book and goes off tangents. Compared to the books the film is nothing and may even be an insult to avid fans of the darren shan saga. However after seeing this with friends who haven't come across the series, they thoroughly enjoyed the 88 minutes. The film is very family friendly as it contains a lot of humor and no extreme gore or violence, except one scene where a characters neck is broken. John C Reily does a brilliant performance as Latern Crepsly who guides the main character, Darren, into becoming a vampire. A talented ensemble helps this pull through, despite a wooden plot, but it may still seem too childish for adults and too adult for kids.
