9/11 Ten Years On,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 9/11: Ten years on (Guardian Shorts) (Kindle Edition)
This is a thought provoking read about the events of 9/11 and the aftermath of what Ed Pilkington calls one of those experiences we all share in an otherwise divided world. On 9/11 Pilkington was the International Editor of the Guardian, worried about his three reporters in New York; one of whom, Jane Martinson, was only five days from giving birth. There were initial fears of 40,000 dead in the confused reports at the scene, followed by first reactions - criticism of the President and hatred and paranoia aimed at muslims not only in America but worldwide (I was shocked to read a school bus of muslim children were stoned in Australia), the violence and the counter violence of the ten years which followed the attack. There are reports on the attack on the Pentagon, but most of the book deals with events in New York; including the first anniversary at Ground Zero, the 'mosque' controversy, the death of Osama bin Laden and reflecting on what happened ten years on. This is a balanced account of a major event, the consequences of which we still live with today. I highly recommend the Guardian Shorts series - they cover a range of different subjects and are very well edited.
