This review is from: The Language Wars: A History of Proper English (Hardcover)
This is a very enjoyable and informative book for anyone interested in the English language and in its development and usage. Covering grammar, spelling, dictionaries, profanity, accents and dialects, and the growing influence of English as a second language around the world, the author has attempted to explain how common understanding of what constitutes 'proper' English has arisen. The book also addresses the controversies regarding the use of language which have grown in recent years as a result of mass media and electronic communications, and through political correctness.
I found the sections about the development of dictionaries to be particularly interesting and informative.
This is a serious look at various topics relating to the English language and although it is enlivened by some sharp comments and humour this book does not make for light reading. Recommended for those who have an interest in linguistics and the growth and use of English around the world.
