When I first received this product I was actually quite impressed. For the price (at time of acquisition) of around the £16-17 mark, it appears to represent reasonable value. It pushes out ok-quality sound considering its size. It unfortunately doesn't come with batteries (a bit disappointing), but it will run off USB without the need to have batteries in. I suspect however that its chief market will be in its guise as a full portable speaker, i.e. plugging it into a portable music player or smartphone. It is here that I suspect this product might be missing the point somewhat.
For starters, it doesn't encourage you to take it around with you, because it has no carry pouch. It also doesn't have a built-in recharge circuit (that I can tell) and no mains adapter, meaning that you can't simply plug it in somewhere and charge it up. This is purely battery or USB powered. The shape of the device is mostly stable, but can lend itself to tipping backwards if unduly knocked. The 3.5mm connection lead coming out of the device is quite thin and I worry that if it weakens it will snap, rendering the device practically useless. The volume sounds fine up to about half way, then it just gets a bit harsh. The back cover is tricky to marry up back into place properly with the audio lead correctly fed through its respective hole.
But perhaps I am being overly critical?
I was about to push this device back up to 4 stars when I decided to check out the competition and came across a smattering of groovy looking alternatives such as the X-Mi, which appear to be in the same price bracket, but feature an in-built rechargable LiOn powersource, a carry bag, extra "buddy" jack allowing you to daisy chain additional speakers together for more sound, 40mm driver (the mere fact that they mention this suggests to me that they value sound quality). It just generally looks better in my opinion.
Maybe this might sound harsh, but unless this was precisely what you were looking for or was at a particularly appealing price, I would probably opt for one of the better featured rivals.
