Brilliant anthology for a brilliant artist,
This review is from: The Alchemist: Best Of 1992-2012 (Audio CD)
This anthology was the first time I'd ever gotten around to checking out Goldie. And my, what an introduction. It really demonstrates what a genius he still is, and it's full of great tracks that to this day haven't been matched the same way by anyone making drum and bass music.
The first CD is perfect as it demonstrates how much production variety, emotion and drama he was able to pack into the relatively straight-forward DnB genre, and many of the tracks are still great bangers today ('Terminator' is a particularly unique track with it's mind-warping, constant time shifts). The second disc focuses more on his more atmospheric side, opening with a really solid new track in the form of 'Single Petal of a Rose', and plenty of soul on songs like 'Freedom' and 'State of Mind', which is helped hugely by some great female vocalists. And the lack disc consists mostly of remixes or alternative versions of other Goldie tracks, including an unfortunately inferior version of Inner City Life in the form of Baby Boy's Edit.
But nonetheless, this is a brilliant summary of Goldie's now 2 decade spanning career and has definitely inspired me to check out the rest of his catalog. Highly recommended.
