This review is from: Secrets Of A Summer Night: Number 1 in series (Wallflower) (Paperback)
The reason why the Wallflowers group together are to find a husband for each of them. Annabelle is up first as the eldest and her circumstances are such that she needs to capture a wealthy peer. At the house of Lord Westcliff, the group endeavour to capture the interest of Lord Kendall and hatch a plan that Annabelle would walk with him alone, and then be caught in flagrante delicto with him - compromised and forced to marry. However there is a fly in the ointment...
Simon Hunt is a self made businessman and most of the peerage disdains him for his profession - after all, nobody should even mention money, let alone pursue it. He has been fascinated with Annabelle for years after a stolen kiss one afternoon but she hasn't paid him any attention since. Events snowball however and eventually Annabelle agrees to a marriage of convenience.
I didn't think I'd like Annabelle at first. She seemed so mercenary, but it is actually rather endearing after she marries Simon, the delight she takes in owning things and the delight Simon takes in giving them to her. She is also a very caring and loyal character, droll at times and makes you like her whether you want to or not.
Simon is brilliant. He is written in such a way that although he doesn't seem to know why he does what he does, his true intentions shine through. He is funny, sexy and highly entertaining. There is a hilarious moment when he and Annabelle are found kissing on the path and even when his friend insists that he shall tell no-one, Simon begins to drag Annabelle into a more public place for, in his words, "she is getting compromised one way or the other tonight!"
Another winner for Lisa Kleypas, as I thoroughly enjoyed this slightly different historical romance, and a great start to a series.
