V-Rock: A Mixed Bag...,
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto Vol 1 - V-Rock (Audio CD)
I love rock music, and I absolutely loved Vice City the game so you would expect me to like this. Personally, I find this album to be a bit of a curate's egg, good in parts but bad in others. The DJ dialogues are highly amusing, as are the "ads" and the song by the "Scottish rock group Lovefist"(as anyone who has played Vice City will tell you).
However, I personally didn't find all the rock to my taste. I DID like the songs by Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Megadeth, Autograph, Twisted Sister, Loverboy and of course Quiet Riot's Slade cover(wonderful version, much much better than the original). Unfortunately, I think Ozzy Osbourne is very overrated, Paranoid is really his only half-decent song, and he will be definitely remembered more for "The Osbournes" than for his awful solo stuff. I don't like David Lee Roth's solo stuff either- he was much better employed when he was in Van Halen, and that was only cos of Eddie Van Halen's superb guitar work that played off his vocals. As for Anthrax, Tesla, Slayer and Iron Maiden, they are just not my cup of tea. Far too heavy for my liking!
So personally, I thought this album was a bit of a mixed bag. However, if you're REALLY into heavier rock(as opposed to my preference for good old commercial Fleetwood Mac), you will probably get more out of this than I did. I will admit most of the album is good solid likeable rock- just I really didn't like a significant chunk of the album, and I'm not going to pretend I really liked it because I didn't. But that's a matter of personal taste. Chacun a son gout, as they say. Overall, if you like heavy rock, buy it. If you don't, then don't. And if you're just like me... well, depends if you see the glass as half full or half empty...
