'Fokus' not to be overlooked,

Now here's a question.. is the current array of techno music the best there has ever been? It seems both the harder, darker Berlin breed of techno is in very good shape - something merely listening to the weekly free CLR podcasts can confirm, but also the more eccentric, bouncier techno presented by labels like Kompakt also still holds massive influence across dancefloors across the world.
Baring in mind that this could be considered techno at its peak, I think its really saying something that Marcel Fengler's 'Fokus' could be considered the best techno album of this year to date. Its very much a dark Berlin-style tech album. But what it does so well is balance creepy, dark soundscapes with hard grooves, chiselled out with gruelling 4x4 basslines. Its opener, 'Break Through' makes a perfect atmospheric opener. 'Jaz' - perhaps the funkiest offering, provides a brighter moment in a deep and dark collection of techno pieces, and stands out as a highlight all the more for it.
I'll be digging into Fokus for a long while to come, and certainly look forward to future releases from Fengler.
