This is the butchered version. Germans get 2 hours more.,
This review is from: The Sinking of the Laconia [DVD] (DVD)
Whilst the film is very good Alan Bleasdale's script was butchered by 2 hours by the BBC. However the longer version will be screened in Germany in November 2011. I'm holding out for a release of the German version in 2012. Here's hoping it has suitable subtitling for English-only speakers.

According to the ( German) website of the TV-station SWR the German version will be the same length, but definitely different. I doubt there will be more Bleasdale...(from what I've seen in a 2 minute videoclip). It will be a prime-time drama and there will be a red-carpet screening, so I guess the focus will be on the German stars, Franka Potente and Ken Duken.

My info was from one of the actors - perhaps an extended version is on the cards some time in the future.

here's hoping the uk released version will have (english) subtitles for the uk's hard of hearing. An awful lot of uk dvds just ignore the needs of the disabled.
Mind you, the German version may well have subtitles including english. assuming the uk version does not, here's hoping the germans are more sympathic.
