This review is from: PROWLER (DVD)The Prowler opens in 1945. The GIs have returned, the dance is in full swing. But one returning hero is not a happy bunny. Jilted by his fiance, Rosemary, this Dear John exacts a blood thirsty revenge. Then 35 years later, 1980, the local college kids are about to hold a graduation party and someone is getting nostalgic.
Clad in combat fatigues, face hidden and armed with a shotgun, pitchfork and huge bayonet The Prowler cuts an imposing figure that tops most of the more celebrated slasher icons. Though there are not many deaths, they have a gloating quality that, in combination with the almost Scooby Doo plotting and the perfectly realised 40s prologue, gives the film a really unbalanced feel. Make-up effects genius, Tom Savini considers the Prowler his best work.
Vicky Dawson makes a decent final girl. Cindy Weintraub (Humanoids From the Deep) and David Sederholm(Coma Guy in an episode of Friends) are amongst the college kids. The film also features a few old-time movie stars, including Farley Granger (Strangers on a Train, Rope) and Lawrence Tierney(Reservoir Dogs)'
One of the interesting features of slasher films was the use of live bands rather than hits of the day. The obligatory house band in this one is Nowherefast and they sound a bit like Blue Oyster Cult circa Secret treaties on the three featured tunes: A View through a Tear/Hard Way/Disco Blood.
