Everyone needs a nifty fifty...,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens (Camera)
I'll assume that if you're considering buying this, you're serious about photography and already know the huge benefits of shooting with L glass (weather sealing, build quality, superb optics).
When it first arrived, I slapped it on my 1D MkIV and fell in love... with the look. It is an incredibly good looking lens and makes my 1D4 look very stocky and strong. Not particularly important on the grand scheme, but I like to have confidence in my kit.
Between f/1.2 and f/2.8 it gets progressively sharper (obviously). f/1.2 is almost unusable, f/1.8 is a big improvement if you nail focus and f/2.8 is absolutely razor sharp. I mainly shoot between f/1.8 and f/2.8. Chromatic aberration between f/1.2 and f/1.8 is definitely noticeable.
Focus is fast and accurate, and I haven't experienced the focus-shift in the wide apertures.
The 50mm focal length is great for portraits, and I've started to only take this 50mm and my 100mm f/2.8L on portrait sessions (I have a 1.3x crop on the 1D4). The fact it's not particularly large is a real benefit with keeping people at ease.
All in it's a great lens and I highly recommend it.
