4.0 out of 5 stars A Better Introduction To The Series Then Volume One, 3 July 2013
This review is from: The Best of Rocko's Modern Life, Vol. 2 (DVD)
Rocko's Modern Life was one of the popular Nickelodeon's Nicktoons shows that were popular back in the early 1990s. With the central character an Australian wallaby, named Rocko, the series focused on his day-to-day struggles with modern-day life, such as having diner with his best friend's family, or doing laundry.
This vibrant brand of screen cartooning stills holds up- even that dated aesthetics of 1990s TV animation shouldn't bother most people- mainly for the gag-based comedy that the show was fondly remembered by those that grew up, and those that like this kind of demented children's programming Nickelodeon was famous for during that decade.
The episodes on here all come from the first season, and whilst some episodes show an attempt at shoehorning in a message (Who's for Dinner), it is often those that go for a gag-for-gag approach to telling its story that are the most successful (Love Spanked, Leap Frogs). The episodes that Stephen Hillenburg (of SpongeBob Squarepants fame) directed were a delight to watch, with the right balance of character interaction with absurd comic moments. Bedfellows, for example, features the concept of Heffer living with Rocko, after his parents decide to rent out his old room at home, and is done in an entertaining screen cartooning manner.
So Volume 2 of The Best of Rocko's Modern Life should live up to most people's expectations that remember the wacky animation aesthetics that made the show such a hit for Nickelodeon throughout the 1990s. Whilst there are three other volumes in this DVD collection of the show, Volume Two is definitely a better introduction to the series then Volume One is, with a few episodes not really standing up well against the test of time as well as most of Volume Two's offerings. Moreover, if you have never seen the show, expect a highly entertaining animated series, that vintage vibe still makes it worth a watch twenty-odd years when they were first transmitted.
