Another Vital, Fascinating Book,
This review is from: The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World's Most Intolerant Religion (Hardcover)
In The Truth About Muhammad, Robert Spencer again provides us with an important and highly readable book on Islam, and the aspects within it that are encouraging jihad terrorists today. This biography of Muhammad's life, along with examples of how it affects current events, is fascinating reading. The pattern of Muhammad's life - from a relatively peaceful man who genuinely respected Jews and Christians, to the warrior who had apostates killed and personally beheaded between 600 and 700 men of the Jewish Banu Qurayza tribe - is clearly laid out and compelling reading. I found it to almost be like a novel, in that you really get a clear sense of how the "character" of Muhammad developed and what drove him, from his early days to his deathbed.
Spencer doesn't exactly try to hide the fact that he disapproves of many of Muhammad's actions. After, since he gives Muslims "a perfect example of conduct", there is nothing to stop the example of this typical seventh century warlord from being emulated today. This makes for refreshing, un-PC, edgy reading. Of course, the author still delivers the facts thoroughly, and tries to address both sides of many of the common arguments.
I would say that for those without some prior knowledge of Islam, this book may get a little bit heavy at times. I would recommend that you familiarise yourself with what Islam teaches before starting this, either by doing your own research or reading some of Spencer's other books.
All in all, this is another interesting and informative book, and should be read by everyone with an interest in understand the conflict we face today. The book may be provocatively titled, but never fear: Robert Spencer lets the facts speak for themselves.
