Antoniou credits Sharon McCrumb's "Bimbos of the Death Sun" for showing her "that mysteries could be funny." She learnt more than that: if you know the former work you'll immediately recognise the affectionate portrayal of the organised chaos of a convention, the things that come out when an obnoxious guest of honour shows up dead, and the reveal using inside knowledge of the subculture. But for all the tribute touches, this is an Antoniou book with the wisdom and understanding of the creator of the "Marketplace," having way more fun than she ever could in the world of the Marketplace.
And just as you don't need to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy McCrumb's whodunnit, you don't need to use so much as fluffy handcuffs in your sex life to appreciate this romp through the wonderful world of the weird. The characters are rounded and believable, the details are well set out without ever feeling expository, and the puzzle is satisfyingly constructed round both character and materials. I recommend it to any mystery fan looking for a new and interesting setting. If you already know the author, of course, her name is recommendation enough.
