A detailed AMERICAN Medical Microbiology Textbook,
This review is from: Medical Microbiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 7e (Paperback)
At the start of this review I would like to note that this medical microbiology textbook is from American authors. This is significant in that throughout the book the epidemiology of all the infective agents (bacteria, virus, microbe & parasite) with all figures referring to rates in America.
Once one has borne this caution in mind such that you do not learn these figures for medical school exams this is a very detailed textbook.
The first 3 sections of this book go through the basics/core knowledge that underpins medical microbiology in quite some depth. After this there is a section on bacteria, viruses, microbes and parasites individually. This proves an advantage if you wish to know about a particular infective agent as many of the most common agents/species have a whole chapter devoted to them.
Most of the chapters of this book include information boxes that tell you about common medical conditions caused by these pathogens. Information is included on detection, diagnosis and prevention/treatment where it exists for each of the pathogens.
On the whole I would say that for a medical student in the UK, there are better textbooks available if you want a more concise format to aid you in learning the required information on this often neglected yet very important area. The books that I would suggest a student would be better to go for would be:
1. Medical Microbiology and Infection at a Glance
2. Lecture Notes: Medical Microbiology and Infection
For a concise format that teaches you most of the essentials you need to know. In some cases though the explanation is lacking and in which case a book such as the Mim's which is by a mostly British team of authors is useful for UK medical students:
3. Mims' Medical Microbiology
To summarise I would only advise someone to get this book if you have a real keen interest in medical microbiology and you already have all of the above books. Otherwise I would advise that you save money by getting one of the other books.
