Compelling, dark stuff!,
This review is from: Red Riding Trilogy [DVD] (DVD)I originally watched this on Channel 4. I had never heard of the Red Riding books nor David Peace before the advertisements previewing the drama were shown.
The ads did the trick, I made time in my schedule to watch TV on the first Thursday. I was hooked. Not for the faint hearted, but the story and the acting was superb. Equally true of the two following 'episodes', drama in their own right, but all intertwined.
I was interested enough to then go and buy the books (all four), and I can understand why Peace devotees complain about the adaptation, but I also understand why it was done, everything, except the change in the ending, which was such a cop out to audience 'expectations'! The adaptation simplified things, not so many crooks, and does miss out large chunks (mainly 1977, but how could they have conveyed the anguish of the journalist and policeman of that book?), but overall the edits work.
I don't own many DVDs, preferring only those I really value and know I will want to watch again. This trilogy is definitely amongst that list.
