Comprehensive and practical,
This review is from: Modern Buddhism: The Path of Compassion and Wisdom - Volume 1 Sutra (Kindle Edition)
This book contains a lot. I don't mean it's a 'tome' or laboured, or wordy, quite the opposite. But each sentence is a carefully crafted meditation in itself meaning that it contains a huge amount of meaning, all of which is presented in a way that is offered to the reader for contemplative exploration rather than information. The style is confident and direct and the fact that the presentation flows so cohesively could lead you to believe the author is expecting you to just take on board everything that is being said quite easily. I think the real thinking behind this presentation is that the author is trusting the reader to have a practical approach to the text, taking points which are found to be useful, putting others to one side for later consideration. Perhaps the most helpful view is to see this book as one big guided meditation, in which each point needs careful digestion but in which the overall structure allows a person to take useful bits as they're found and to knit them together as they go along. The whole of the Buddhist path as presented in the author's tradition is covered here. Non academic but scholarly, precise, practical, heartfelt and with an amazing structure, I really do love this book!
