A great Bond film,
This review is from: James Bond - On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Ultimate Edition 2 Disc Set) [DVD] (DVD)
I am a huge fan of Bond films. This one, the first time I saw it, when I was very young (10-11 years old) was really disappointing. Who was that chap, that Lazenby? And a married Bond? This didn't seem to fit in the category "A Bond film". Then I saw it again, many years later, and I had to change my mind. This is a great film, and Lazenby is nothing less than perfect for it. Connery, Moore and Brosnan played the canonical Bonds, while Dalton and Lazenby had to play a different Bond. I can't imagine Moore or Connery getting married, or planning a personal and really savage vendetta, as Dalton did in License to kill. These stories simply needed a different actor. Something like that happens now with Casino Royale. But OHMSS also has Q, incredible chases, one of them in the snow, and, for me, a really marvellous Bond girl, one of the best songs, and the best end scene. Diana Rigg simply steals the film every time she appears on screen, and the moments when "We have all the time in the world" sounds, the scene is filled with charm. And what to say about that ending? Lazenby shines here. We believe his performance, although it must be the only time we have seen Bond like this.
As for the baddie, Savallas makes a decent Blofeld, but, I think, worse than Pleasence.
After seeing this new release, the good points of the film are enhanced, and I simply forget about the bad ones. A superb film, really.
