First impressions... an excellent air combat simulator!,
This review is from: Birds of Steel (PS3) (Video Game)
I won't reiterate here everything in the product review but I will say that this is truly an excellent game. Essentially a sequel to the brilliant IL-2 Sturmovik, Birds of Steel excels it in pretty much everyway. The graphics are at least on par with its prequel as to is the sound, aircraft modelling and mission construction.
One thing that has been built upon is the gameplay, from the ability to zoom in at a target at any time including when amidst a dogfight, which can really bring the experience up close and personal, to the fantastic replays that are able to be viewed at the end of each Historic Mission. These replays can be viewed from multiple angles and scrolling through these as your mission plays out as you flew it can produce some truly cinematic-like scenes. A great and satisfying addition to the game. The combat itself has also been made far more intense than that in Sturmovik, for e.g. when fighting over enemy ships or airfields, the flak that explodes around you not only rings in your ears but also shakes and rattles your plane and when dogfighting an enemy that is bleeding oil all over your cockpit with someone else on your tail you cannot help but feel the adrenaline pumping.
Some of the Historic Missions can be a little short with the order to return to the airfield or aircraft carrier after only taking out a single ship or a couple of planes but you can always stay in the battle if you so desire to rack up your XP points. That said some of the missions are truly epic and on more than one occassion I have stayed in battle just long enough to limp my smoking and hole-peppered plane away from the fight only to find i still had a good few minutes to fly with Zero's on my tail that i needed to see off with the tail gunner to ensure i made it back to the carrier.
With aircraft skin and decal customisation and extensive online playability this is a great game for a great price and i challenge even those not overly interested in flight combat games not to want to fly just one more mission.

I agree, it is such a good game. Gaijin probably make the best flying games nowadays. (especially since Project Aces decided to ruin the last couple of Ace Combat games) Birds of prey and Apache: air assault were great and Birds of steel is even better. It's their duty to now make a game with modern jets, I can just imagine how awesome it would be if they decide to make one.

Thanks for taking the time to write your review. I purchased it the other day and look forward to watching some replays of my dodgy flying!
