This review is from: The Old Man And The Sea [DVD] (DVD)
Although there were positive aspects to this film, most notably when Santiago was out at sea and and his relationship with Manolin, the young couple were not in the original story, added nothing to it and and as I saw it served no purpose. More should have been made of contrasting the old fishing ways to the new methods just been brought in to Cuba at that time, and how Santiago was a noble representative of the old school of thought. This above all was the legacy he was going to leave Manolin. In addition, one of the more important symbolisms of the book were the young lions. These should have been captured in Santiago's dreams, as represetative of him as a young man. Good acting by Anthony Quinn, but a disappointing rendition of a truly great book.
