A beautiful, heart-warming classic,
This review is from: Elling [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This is a wonderful, heart-warming and genuinely hilarious film about two men, Elling and Kjell-Bjærne, who have spent a good deal of time sharing a room in a psychiatric institution. Neither of them are seriously mentally ill, but they have problems relating to other people and coping with the basic tasks of everyday life that most of us take for granted, such as going shopping or using a telephone. The film opens with these two characters discovering that they are deemed to have made enough progress to take a step back into the real world. They are given a council flat in central Oslo and a social worker who comes to check on them and encourage their progress. As the film progresses, the friendship between the two central characters develops and both of them start to be able to cope better with reality and to start living meaningful and satisfying lives. This is a deeply beautiful and funny film about being human and is one of my absolute favourite movies. The book by Ingvar Ambjørnsen that this film was based on has been translated into English as "Beyond the Great Indoors."
