An epic RPG,
This review is from: Final Fantasy VIII (PS) (Video Game)
Having completed FFVIII I can safely say there is a lot more than 40 hours gameplay in there. I took me just under 100 hours to complete and I skimped on some of the sub-quests!
The battle system as ever with an RPG seems over complicated when you read the manual. But, if you stick with it past the first couple of hours it rapidly becomes second nature. The magic and GF system allow for a rapid increase in your characters abilities and result in some seriously impressive graphics.
Yes, random battles do occur a LOT but they are necessary to increase your characters abilities otherwise you'll be found wanting at the end of the game. I think most RPG players expect these random battles and would be dissapointed if you didn't get them (Later in the game they become an excuse to wipe out weak enemies with some of the most ridiculously powerful magic seen in an RPG - always fun!)
My one complaint was that the trading card game seemed pointless. I know the manual tells you it's essential but having completed the game without playing it I can say it isn't...
In conclusion an epic RPG with a wonderful character driven storyline. Probably the most impressive FMV seen in a Playstation game and the in-game graphics almost live up to the cut scenes. FFIX has a lot to live up to and so does Playstation-2.
