Firstly, an update, Nov 2012: Just watch "The Inbetweeners" tv series 1,2,3 and the movie. To paraphrase Bruce SpringsteenBorn In The U.S.A., "We learnt more from a 23 minute tv show than we ever learnt in school".The Inbetweeners - Series 1-3 - Complete [DVD]The Inbetweeners Movie [DVD]I had read Jane Moore article in the Sun about this book so took a gamble. Yes I like the book but I took it with a large pinch of salt.
Firstly, I am a male, 44 year old, married, hetro, AND NO KIDS what-so-ever, HOORAY REALLY DOPE & SICK ABOUT THAT !!!!!!. However, I do have 2 nieces, one is 7, the other 10 going on 17. It is for their mother who I really got the book for. The two authors, Megan & Louise do come across as level-headed straight thinking 16 year olds with some good pointers. The kids try to see it from both sides but are obviously biased towards the teens.
I will keep it loose. Topics covered: Sex; drink; drugs; internet (social); culture (inc music and fashion). Good advise given to parents BUT for gods sake, it was your grandparents generation that pioneered Heavy Metal (Deep Purple, Led Zepp & Sabbath (circa 1969)). "Loud music" was the name of the game for The Who, Purple & even Pink Floyd. In turn, your parents peers created Goth with Fields Of Nephilim, The Mission & The Cult. Some basic musical (lifestyle) history went a foot somewhere with these two. We had Goths at school, (mid 80s) and EMOs before Emo was a word. So words and phrases go round and around. (Remember how 1991 was the new 1967?).
I digress. If you can cut through the teenage angst you can start to understand your teen - that is was the book is all about. KIDS we were teens - YES we went to parties, yes we drank, yes we took drugs and low and behold I even went to Shagaluff for a holiday ON MY OWN so get over that. Sick & dope or wat?? To all teens: And I bet your grandparent could tell you a thing or to as well but you're to young to dig them. Listen: You did not invent sex, or partying or chillin' or happenings (is that word in or out at the moment?) And you did not invent cool speak. How on Earth did parents parent before this book came out - OMG they just did.
Finally, just one point about the book I feel should be refocused. Just in case "an old fogie" is reading the book the Glossary would be better right at the front. And in turn some of the lingo used is so November 2011 (ie "last year")!
