This review is from: The Novel in the Viola (Paperback)
I almost didn't buy this book, because the cover looked so commercial, romantic and 'soft'. But I knew I was seeing Natasha Solomons at the Guildford Literary Festival so decided to give it a go. I'm so glad I did. It is a well-written, well-researched tale of some of the forgotten victims of WW2 - the ones who 'got away' but were plunged into a very different life from the one they had known, finding themselves in an alien country without family, friends or much choice in how they made a living. The story was engaging, and the detail felt realistic. It would make a good book club choice (for when people want something a little lighter than the Booker Prize shortlist)or it would be a good holiday read: entertaining, but also giving you something to think about. I would recommend it.
