This review is from: A Rural Affair (Paperback)
I'm a huge fan of Catherine Alliott; she's exactly perfect for reading when life's a bit flat, or I need something to cheer me up. There aren't many writers who make me laugh aloud - or cry for that matter - but Catherine ALWAYS makes me embarrass myself; I forget where I'm reading (usually the train), and I giggle like a fourteen year old. Then I look up, catch a disapproving eye, and blush horribly, so people think I'm reading porn. Awful!
I wasn't sure about buying this book after reading the negative comments on here - but God, I'm glad I did. It's a lovely book, full of funny sketches, and little witty bits that I can steal and use at dinner parties. I particularly liked the depiction of the relationship between the protagonist and her father - it was so lightly done, never mawkish; and I liked the friendships between the four women. My only complaint would be it was too short - I'd have liked to have seen perhaps more scenes with Sam in, and the love building, and perhaps more on the children and how they coped with their father's death. However, I'm nit-picking!
Jolly good book, Catherine Alliott, can't wait to read your next one.
