3.0 out of 5 stars Slow, but readable, 1 Nov. 2009
This review is from: The Host (Paperback)
I have not read Meyer's vampire novels, disliking series in general, so I thought this one would be better since it is a stand-alone. Science fiction is a genre I love on screen, but which is often seen as male or technocentric. In fact there are great women writers working in SF, but on the strength of The Host, I can't see Meyer ever being one of them. In fact, I don't think this book is actually for serious SF fans of either gender. It's more of a romance/suspense book, and if you read it with that in mind, you're less likely to be disappointed. I liked the beginning, but felt that it started to go flat in the middle. I didn't like all the characters - Jared in particular was neither attractive nor well drawn. I think the novel would have been better for losing a hundred pages, or to put it another way, for condensing the narrative into a hundred fewer pages. Although it's often been described as an adult novel, it still seems very young adult to me. In that respect it might be a crossover book. It just felt as if the novel was written too fast and that Meyer didn't really think through the background to her premise, particularly relating to life on other worlds. She did play around with ethics and morality, and the contained environment of the rebel hideout allowed characters' suspicions and anxieties to bounce off one another. I'm glad I read the book, but would be unlikely to read another Meyer. For anyone interested in science-fiction romance, I'd recommend the classic Tanith Lee novel, The Silver Metal Lover, which has a young adult narrative style but is perfectly readable to adults. It's a small book in comparison to The Host, and there's been a sequel released more recently.

I quite liked the ending of the book - and I thought in terms of character depth Meyer's writing has definitely improved. I hated Bella Swan with a vengeance :)
