This review is from: New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook (Paperback)
I've been painting in acrylics for 30 years, and I found this book quite fascinating - and very enlightening. Unlike watercolours and oils (if you exclude the advance to water-based oils) acrylics continue to advance technologically day by day, and it pays to know what is going on before you are entirely left behind...
This is very much NOT a "how to paint" book. It's written by a technical development employee of a very large transatlantic paint manufacturer, and although presented in an enjoyably light, easy-to-read style, is often couched in scientific terms. This should not put you off. A key to success in any kind of art is "know your medium", and this book, along with its predecessor, will tell you everything you want to know about acrylics - and if you thought that perhaps wasn't all that much, then, like me, you'd be quite wrong. It's worth reading even by painters who currently don't use acrylics, or at least those with an enquiring and expanding mind.
The paintings are mostly abstract or "constructions", but this seems to be largely because it's the easiest way to rapidly, and graphically, demonstrate the increasingly astounding properties of acrylics and huge variety of often fun-filled ways in which they can be employed. Figurative painters (such as me) have barely scratched the surface of this 21st century medium, if you'll forgive the metaphor...
