Overlong but not a bad drama,
This review is from: Mayday [DVD] (DVD)
'Mayday' was one of those typical series that started off with promise and fizzled out to an overlong anti climax. The story was of a missing girl and a list of suspects, well virtually every man featured actually. The story was too drawn out and the ending was on the ridiculous side with far more questions than answers.
The acting was a mixed bag with good perfomances from an underused Peter Firth(Malcolm) and his edgy wife Gail played by Lesley Manville. Sophie Okonedo gave a very odd performance as Fiona and seemed in a trance most of the time. The story was gripping at times but started to get silly and I had several problems with it.
MAJOR SPOILERS!!!! What the hell happened to Seth? Was he just beaten up or had Hattie's dad killed him? Who the hell were the men Linus was talking to online? Why did the much respected ex cop Fiona suddenly become a bad cop by framing Everett. Ok, she was protecting her husband but it seemed totally unrealistic and yes, it was payback for what happened between her and Everett 20 years ealier. But how was the viewer supposed to know what DID happen? It was never explained. How did Caitlin become a blonde so quickly at the end? How did the slightly built Alan manage to get Hattie up a tree? How did the police evidence suddenly and magicly become a stone? This was a series that tried to add magic and mysticism but it just seemed desperate. So yes, 'Mayday' had promise but five episodes was too long and this story could probably have been told in three. I did like the pointing bit at the end though.
This is quite hard to rate. It was too long but rushed at the end. It descended into silliness but it was quite watchable a lot of the time. I would give it 2.5 or a little more if I could so it just scrapes three.

I so agree with your review and had the same questions as you. The ending did seem implausible and there were so many things that were never resolved.

Too many spoilers. Had recorded these. Appreciate warning but difficult not to read on.

The pointing bit at the end is taken from the ending of the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I found the explanation given for the murder ridiculously implausible to say the least and there was not even a hint of this throughout the previous 5 episodes. Also, the killer was always a major suspect from the start. one wonders whether the ending had been re-written at some point.
