Thrilling Suspense in a Car-Boot,
This review is from: Brake [DVD] (DVD)
'Brake' is psychological thriller film that had a limited United States theatrical release in 2012. The feature has been criticized by some for being too similar to the film, 'Buried' starring Ryan Reynolds. It opened to mixed reviews and failed at the box-office. However, on the DVD and Video-on-demand front the response has been better.
The story centers around Jeremy Reins (Stephen Dorff) who is kidnapped by terrorists and held captive in a boot of a car. The terrorists then try to extract important information from Reins in order to execute a sinister plot.
On first impressions things that work against the movie are as follows, the straight to DVD release in the UK, plot being too similar to 'Buried' and the thought of seeing not salable anymore Stephen Dorff spending 99% of the movie in a car boot. So, how did it fare? Well, the movie looks expensive due to the slick direction, I liked it a lot more than 'Buried' and finally Stephen Dorff puts in a solid performance.
As the DVD cover promotes, it truly is a High Octane Thriller from start finish with plenty of twists. The final act has received so much flak, but I found it totally unexpected and worth it.
Stephen Dorff has a lot of potential as an actor but unfortunately over the years his career has plummeted. In this movie his acting is the backbone and keeps you glued to the screen.
The skillful direction by Gabe Torres creates a generous amount of suspense and tension, which is non-existent in big-budget movies. His direction and Dorff's super-charged acting made this an awesome viewing.
'Brake' is one of those low-budget gems that I found to be exciting.
