A Great Read,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Great Game: An Imperial Adventure (Kindle Edition)
Our protagonist, Toby Larburgh - a retired young soldier - is sent to investigate the death of a British agent in the mountains on what is now the Pakistan-Afghan border and so begins an adventure far more dangerous and exciting than anything he experienced in the British army.
Toby is a great main character and narrator, and the rest of the cast are well rounded and appealing, particularly the two mercenaries and the brilliantly evil villain.
It's a wonderful classic adventure story, with a few typical and comfortable plot points that ease you in before the surprise plot twists arrive that will keep you guessing until the end.
Overall a wonderful short story, full of daring adventure and wonderful descriptive language.
A less accomplished writer might have been tempted to stretch the story out into a full novel, but it's nice to read something that doesn't needlessly drag on, full of filler - this novella is all prime stuff.
It's also turned me on to the Kindle Single's format, I might have to find more short stories to read while I await a O'Brien's next Great Game.
