Of course Oliver Nelson and Eric Dolphy are both phenomenal players, and this is a great modern jazz album. I think the recording order for Oliver Nelson's 3 most remembered albums is 'Screamin' the Blues' followed by 'The Blues and the Abstract Truth' and finally 'Straight Ahead'. Then why do I award 'Straight Ahead' with one less star than the other two? It is because I miss the presence of either Richard Williams (the trumpeter on 'Screamin' the Blues') or Freddie Hubbard (the trumpeter of The Blues and the Abstract Truth') The contrast of brass with woodwind is so good I miss it when it's not there. Never mind, still a great album and worth 4 stars of anyone's money.
