Dream inside this box,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Datapanik In The Year Zero (Audio CD)
Having most already on vinyl, apart from a few oddities I ummed and arrrd before clicking the button and purchasing the box set. I can report it was a wise purchase. Incorporates all of early Pere Ubu for those who are initiates.
The CD saves getting up every twenty minutes to change the sides over. It also stops the fuzzy tones of dust collecting on the needle spoiling the moment.
The mastering is slightly different to the vinyl so other components of the sound emerge out of the mix and bite you. It has all the early work, the proto punk weirdies plus the abstract more conceptual later pieces.
Cheaper to buy as a set than individually, these are all strange wonderful slabs of music composed on the shores of the Great Lakes in Cleveland Ohio. They detail a mind wandering around inside its head, the lyrics are replete with self talk spoken out loud. Out of these surreal outpourings streams turn into rivers and then large lakes as the consciousness floods. David Thomas develops a form of cut up fun doused in lashings of surrealism turning an internal darkness into many shades of light without the bile of bitterness.
You can get hours of fun from this special package. It also brims with ideas modern music has overlooked. The use of the theremin and the discordant synth to act as a counter to the main rhythm, discarding the drums to explore soundscapes, the use of found sounds to mix within the main, throwing out verse chorus, the use sea shanties, all combined with a punk despair that creates a happy lalala land. Pere Ubu were two sided with their apparent jolliness hiding another deeper facet and their wierd and wacky pieces wrapped around a sharp poignant observation.
David's self talk connects outwardly, the random thoughts of non linear imagining are allowed out to walk, contort and blast. Whereas most songs are based on the rational display of emotions, Pere Ubu spoke up for the irrational. This is contained on all of their albums and marks them as "different."
Essential for those who want to think outside of any particular box.
