Excellent guide to Khartoum,
This review is from: The City Trail Guide to Khartoum and the rest of Sudan: Including a Fully Updated Section on Exploring the Rest of the Sudan (Paperback)
This book contains a wealth of relevant information about Sudan and Khartoum in particular. The writers spent some time living in Sudan while researching the book and this clearly shows in the depth and reliability of their knowledge. I particularly liked the maps of the bus routes which will be useful for anyone staying in Sudan at a time when taxi rides have soared in price. The book also includes a useful introduction to Sudanese Arabic and some pointers to Sudanese culture. It is an honestly written book which I feel portrays Sudan as it is- the positive and the negative. It can appear slightly wordy in a couple of places but this is a very minor criticism.
My main disappointment with the book was that it doesn't include more site maps and information about the archaeological sites such as the Merowe pyramids.
The book is ideal for those coming to live/study/work in the Sudan rather than coming as a traveler. The 2008 edition I have is a little out of date as Khartoum is a rapidly evolving city. So it is probably best to try and purchase the newer edition.
