ItSAWful!! Not a good way to spend 90 mins!,
This review is from: Saw: The Final Chapter [DVD] (DVD)
I must say I was once quite a fan of the Saw films, and even accepted the rather over the top gore which featured heavily, since about the third film. But since Saw 5 (which is where in my opinion things started dipping in terms of quality) we now seem to have more and more gore (if that were possible) and less and less plot. The acting has taken a turn for the worse also. Here, in the 'final' instalment, things have reached an all time low. Once again, like in 5 and 6, the plot is focused all too heavily on the new 'villain' that is Hoffman, and the actor playing him let's face it, won't win any oscars for his display here. In Saw 4 his acting was pretty lame, but it was rescued somewhat by what was for me, an exciting (albeit disturbing) film, with more twists and turns than you could handle almost, and the time of events being all back to front, etc. etc. By the end of this film and the re-emergence of Dr. Lawrence Gordon, you actually get a glimpse inside the warped and dangerously violent minds of the writers and creators of this franchise, by wishing a vile and excruciating death on Hoffman . . . for his dreadful acting as much as for the unnecessary suffering he's inflicted upon countless others. In fact it's a shame that Dr Gordon (Cary Elwes) doesn't get more screen time here, along with Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, of course. You're left wondering exactly who Dr. Gordon is, and it isn't really clear if his help in Jigsaw's twisted games puts him in the same evil category as Jigsaw (he is evil, let's face it. Not as evil as Hoffman, but evil none the less. With TV Show Dexter you get much more of a belief that the main character is killing for the greater good). But that's overshadowed by the feeling that Hoffman never really gets what he deserves.
Talking of acting, the performance of the main cop in this film (the little guy who Hoffman is after for reporting him for shooting someone, who was trying to kill the cop, where the said cop sees it as an unnecessary killing) is just appalling. Makes Costas Mandylor (guy who plays Hoffman) look like Laurence Olivier. Then you have the cartoon-like violence and gore, featuring a ridiculous quantity of entrails being flung about, prosthetic limbs and torsos that don't loo very realistic, smashed faces, eye-gouging, bodies being ripped and torn to bits, electrocutions, burnings, hangings, etc. etc. all done for the sake of shock value. And just like with previous Saw films, there is no suspense during the trap sequences anymore. There's just the dreaded wait until everyone in sight inevitably dies . . . horribly. Even those that have a glimmer of a chance of surviving end up meeting a nasty end.
All in all almost a waste of 90 minutes. The whole thing looks rushed, the acting is poor, not everything from previous films has been tied together and concluded, the gore is almost laughably over the top. The countdown timers during the trap sequences seem incredibly slow, and I'm sure that won't have gone unnoticed either. I must admit I laughed out loud at one point. If it was done to add to any suspense, it didn't work as it was too unrealistic in terms of what else was happening. The reason I say almost a waste of 90 minutes is because at the very least Hoffman is left to die at the end and I was glad Dr. Lawrence Gordon re-appeared, even if it was all too brief. Hopefully they won't make another one in this now sorry franchise.
Not a film that will be remembered for the right reasons, if at all.

I agree with your review but also agree with Butch's comment, please include a spoiler warning or dont put any plot spoilers in the review.

Apologies, although the 'plot' is so poor and laughable that I didn't think a spoiler warning was that necessary :)
