The best pair of Windproof overtrousers on the market,
This review is from: Montane Featherlite Pants (Apparel)
Let's get one thing straight, these overtrousers by Montane were never designed to be waterproof even though they have a water repellant coating on them, that water repellancy will not last long and for the majority of walkers these overtrousers may appear useless.
Another vitally important aspect about these over trousers is that they have an athletic cut to them, meaning that if you are of average build and carrying a little more weight than is neccessary you may struggle to get into them. They were designed principally for endurance runners and fell runners who wanted body hugging wind proof over trousers. I am not saying that the average person would not be able to get into them, but if you wear heavy trousers or similar walking clothing there is little legroom.
The trousers have been manufactured from the very litest weight Pertex and were designed principally for fell runners or fast walkers who travel with the most basic of kit and are wanting to keep the wind away from tired legs. The average walker who ventures into the hills fully laden with ruc sac full of gear will tear these trousers to shreds in no time due to their minimalist construction, unlike various more robust Goretex over trousers these Pertex over trousers were never designed for walking through brambles, bushes or even mountain heather, that kind of terrain would rip through the thin Pertex in minutes.
They are superb wind proofs and will be worn in mountainous country away from prickly bushes.
You see as a walker wind and rain can be a killer because you are moving so slowly losing bodyheat rapidly especially in the colder months, but if you are travelling quickly such as your average fell runner you are building up bodyheat even in colder temperatures and therefore feel fairly comfortable whilst soaked to the skin.
It's all about maintaining body temperature and wind is the main problem when you are soaking wet.
Walking at a slow pace soaked to the skin will sap a persons energy and bodyheat leading to Hyperthermia, I know because I've experienced it in small doses whilst walking in the Northern Carneddau on a map reading course in 2004, but if you are travelling fast you will probably be able to maintain body temperature and wearing these Featherlite trousers will be a blessing.
Pertex is designed to be incredibly windproof and when it does get wet it dries incredibly fast, so much so that even when these overtrousers are saturated with water they still maintain their windproof properties.
There are currently on the market few overtrousers that weigh as little as these Montane Featherlites and if you are a serious fell runner or an athlete who regularly takes part in ultradistance events where weight is a big issue then these trousers will be manner from heaven.
Now if it's a very liteweight pair of fully waterproof overtrousers you are after Montane also manufacture a pair of those as well but these Featherlite trousers are for those people who do not care about getting soaked to the skin because due to these trousers amazing windproof properties you can still maintain body temperature even when wet.
They may appear slightly expensive for overtrousers that will not keep the rain out for very long, but if you are searching for possibly the lightest pair of windproof overtrousers then they look decent value, and there are only two or three other Pertex trousers on the market manufactured by other companies that come anywhere near these Featherlites for quality and weight.
Like all Montane equipment they are beautifully manufactured and should last years if well looked after, but you must remember these windproofs are designed for a particular sector of the market.
They also come with what has to be Montanes smallest stuff sac.
The stuff sac is so small that t's a bit of an effort to get these trousers into it, but they do fit and they pac so small that you can hide the package in the palm of your hand.
These Featherlites are the perfect combination if you already own one of Montanes Pertex jackets and also you are one of those rare breed of walkers who are trying to get their gear down to virtually nothing in weight yet can still relie on it to keep you safe in the hills.

Mr. P. J. R. LEWIS says:
I've used these very lite weight Pertex trousers for the past three years, and I would take anything that Montane say in their product description with a pinch of salt.
You must remember, these trousers are amongst the litest bits of clothing on the market, they have no waterproof membrane, just a basic water repellant coating.
If worn in very heavy rain, that water repellant coating will soon wash off.
These Featherlite trousers are essentially extreme lite weight windproofs, with a water repellant coating.
Take my word for it, the water repellant coating does not last long, and when it does wash off, there is little point in reapplying it.
Any lite weight Pertex with a water repellant coating, will soon saturate with water.
If your after waterproof Overtrousers, Montane make those as well, but the choice of Pertex used in these Featherlites were not designed to be the slightest bit waterproof.
Take my word for it, I've used them quite a few times, their windproofs.
Forget what Montane say in their advertising, that's their ploy to sell more of them.
