Masterful Production Long Lasting & Classic,
This review is from: I'm Breathless (Audio CD)
As Madonna stepped the ladder to super stardom she explored her acting and as many may say stumbled a bit. But with this soundtrack and movie she definitely hit the jackpot in terms of showing her artistic style and perseverance to conquer the screens as well as the sound in her vocal performance. This amazing album not only takes you to that time, but also to the past were celebrities like Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, and other big names made quite a mark. The music was inspired for the movie DICK TRACY. Madonna not only gave critics something to talk about but also showed her staying power and versatility in embarking on something different and new. This particular album has her musical sound to have influences with jazz horns, the 40's, dance, and definitely classic style! Fans of Lady Gaga may see a reminisce of this like in Lady Gaga's Thanksgiving Special performance with Tony Bennet or her BBC Radio 1's Weekend performance of "Orange Colored Sky". Not exact, but a similar incorporation of taking from the past. That being said, this album is a sure fire banging sensation to enjoy!
While many songs are clearly visible and heard in many of Madonna's tours like VOGUE, HANKY PANKY, I'M GOING BANANAS, SOONER OR LATER, and NOW I'M FOLLOWING YOU others are also heard on the movie Dick Tracy like MORE, to name one. Quite noticeable to the average music fan of hers is Madonna's transformation of vocals as here they sound very nice. Not quite Minnie Mouse on Helium but more like a total resonating pitch along the lines of classic Hollywood legends like Marilyn Monroe and others. The music is elegant, strong in portraying emotions, and very deep thought provoking. For example, WHAT CAN YOU LOSE bringing a transition for the listener to hear, think, and contemplate. While love is beautiful it can be very difficult to experience in such a hard world. This is about letting go of your fears, your worries, and just letting the singing, music and style take you on a journey of fantasy where your wants and desires can happen. It's positive, empowering at times, fun on others.
Fans of Madonna will have many already heard songs like NOW I'M FOLLOWING YOU as it was danced and performed on her BLOND AMBITION TOUR. Another song also performed and very funny and tongue-in-cheek is I'M GOING BANANAS danced and sung on her GIRLIE SHOW TOUR. And of course the beautiful HANKY PANKY very uniquely and classically danced and sung on THE REINVENTION TOUR and BLOND AMBITION TOUR. Aside these, many are also present as described above. Another excellent addition is the touching ballad titled SOMETHING TO REMEMBER found on her album Something to Remember. This has a softer, more subtle Madonna singing in a very luscious yet somber tone of love being a memory and nothing more. It is one of the songs I can relate to the most as being a single woman in a world of men that make promises they don't keep are quite common.
The overall experience is classic, epic, and elegance combined with enthusiasm to take on perhaps a project you were not inspired to do, or an uplift from a mood that maybe was not good or cheerful. Songs like VOGUE also inspire and bring much energetic beats and vocals definitely club-strong and dance friendly. For new Madonna fans, this may be more of a "get in the groove to experience something different" mood rather than another Madonna club dance sound or pop style. It's a great album to play for many generations as the music never sounds outdated or dull.
This album was released May 22, 1990. The Japanese release features the lyrical sheet with both Japanese and English words to the song. The original releases did not have the lyrics. The obi-strip is also included adding collector's worth down-the-line. Other than that, there are no extra bonus tracks or added material. It is 45:08 minutes long. Madonna worked with many producers among the more known would be Shep Pettibone, Patrick Leonard, Bill Bottrell, and Gilbert. There were only 2 singles spawned: Vogue released March 20, 1990 and Hanky Panky +3 released June 30, 1990.
The first single VOGUE is a dance pop song and has club sounds with house beats. It is a very disco influenced song and a number very common back in the earlier times when the Latino and Afro American community was practicing their fashion pose dance styles [to imitate the Hollywood stars] in garage type get togethers/underground gay scene as the alternative lifestyle was still not accepted at the time according to Madonna As Postmodern Myth: How One Star's Self-Construction Rewrites Sex, Gender, Hollywood and the American Dream. The video and song played tribute to other Hollywood legends from the 20s and 30s. The video won 3 awards at the 1990 MTV VMA's out of 9 nominations according to Wikipedia. It was performed recently on the Super-bowl Halftime Bridgeport Show. The song went to #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. VOGUE was also performed at the 1990 MTV VMA wearing the Marie Antoinette inspired clothes. The second single, HANKY PANKY incorporates some swing and pop. The single peaked at #10 in the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold by the RIAA. In the UK it peaked to #2.
SOONER OR LATER was performed also at the 1991 Oscar Awards creating quite a splash as Madonna was also seen hand in hand with Michael Jackson and looking very much like Marilyn Monroe. It has a very jazzy sound with much inspiring energetic beats. The song went on to win Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Critics and fans were amazed at Madonna's vocals as it became apparent she had vocal training and much improved sound. The album reached the top 10 in the United States and was certified Gold, Platinum, and 2x Platinum across. It sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. In support of this album and her LIKE A PRAYER album Madonna embarked on her BLOND AMBITION TOUR to promote them. Madonna has publicly stated that she feels this album is one of her favorites and that all of the songs are great.
