Solid, cheesy fun!,
This review is from: Slithis [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
A radioactive mud-monster that looks very much like a guy in a suit (admittedly a well designed one!) is terrorising venice california, rising from the canals at night to eat whichever poor sod gets in its way and only a commited (or certifiable depending on your point of view) high school journalism teacher is prepared to track it down!
Slithis is a bizarre but entertaining creature feature that once again demonstrates the horrors of radiation, by this time creating a killer mud monster! The editing is ropey at best as is the acting and the bizarre sound design where the creature feeding on human victims is accompanied by an almost obscene sucking noise that sounds like someone sucking ice cream! Fortunately slithises flaws are mainly the reason I enjoy the film, some scenes are genuinelly hysterical including a police chief that overacts to such a degree I seriously wonder if they found and cleaned some homeless insane person and shoved him in front of the camera getting him to act for drugs. The cheesiness helps sell the film a lot, as while anyone after a serious and scary creature feature are probably better served looking at the origional humanoids from the deepHumanoids From Deep (1980) [DVD] [US Import] anyone after a cheesy film to watch with friends or anyone like me who simply gets a lot of kicks out of films like this will defnately enjoy it. I knocked a star off the score because of the lack of extras, Code red a company doing sterling work depriving me of my cash with releases like this, have done a fine job restoring the picture and sound and the film looks better than it deserves to but a few extras like a retrospective or a commenmatary could have been a fun inclusion.
Overall then, this is worth a look for cult film enthuisiasts, or anyone looking for a fun drinking movie, so long as you realise the film is cheesier than a hunk of edam you probably wont be dissapointed.
