I wait eagerly for every episode from the life of Comissario Brunetti, so I decided to try this one too. I finally settled down to read it by a warm fire in dull January. And I found I was reading a dull book. Having finished it I asked myself "What was all that about?". One pointless mysterious trailing of our heroine affords just a little suspense but the rest of the book never quite gets started. I even got the feeling part way through that the author was fed up with the thing too and just wanted to round up the few skeleton story threads and push on to something more rewarding. Certainly the ending rounded it all up, no cliffhangers here.
I regret rating such a good author with a mere 2 stars but frankly this is more a sketch plan for a novel that could be worked up into something interesting than a finished book. I dare to add I've written better unpublished material myself!
If you are Brunetti fan, ignore this digression and wait for more tales of our favourite commisario.
