This review is from: Doctor Who: Series 1 - Volume 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Is the new Doctor Who (2005) series any good? well yes and no. On the plus side, it's entertaining, funny, vibrant and energetic and is well acted with good character development, especially the Doctor's new assistant - Rose played by Billie Piper. On the downside it's now too lightweight, frothy, and way too soap opera.
'Rose' (1st episode) features the return of the Autons, and is an excellent start to the new series, and on this occasion can be forgiven for being too soapy, as it has to introduce Rose's family background. 'The End Of The World' is just plain silly and annoying and way too camp, it feels more like 'Flash Gordon' (The Movie) - but in a bad way, with irritating and unconvincing aliens including tree people, midgets and a stretched piece of skin, which in fairness is quite funny, as it is voiced by Zoe Wannamaker who is given a witty script. Also the mechanical spiders are pretty cool. With regards to the space station, although it looks very impressive and state of the art from the outside, the inside is more like a large hotel conference room. 'The Unquiet Dead' is the first genuine attempt at horror out of these 1st three episodes of the new series, and is scripted by Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen) who has written an excellent eerie Gothic ghost story set in Cardiff 1869.
Although I very much enjoyed 'Rose' and 'The Unquiet Dead', I can't bring myself to buy this DVD, because 'The End Of The World' is way too embarrassing to own (for me anyway).
