This review is from: Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops? (Paperback)An excellent read and a real eye-opener. All those records that went into the top 10........how many of them really made it because people purchased them and how many made it because of the "promotional" practices of the record labels ? ..... Some hilarious anecdotes about the record-buying public and their various character traits....and it's true - the independent record store I used to visit did have a smelly customer whom I always seemed to end up standing next to.
This book also reinforces the prevailing view - the high streets in all the towns around the UK now look the same and feel the same, dominated by "vanilla" retail choices whatever one is interested in buying, be it music, clothes or coffee. Some nice stories about the "good guys" - many of the world-class acts and artists mentioned have and still support their local specialist independent store. Thoroughly recommended and bought back a lot of memories of shopping in these stores and as a consequence, will now get in my car and make the effort to go to them again.
