CONNIE'S INTERNATIONAL COLLECTION,
This review is from: The International Connie Francis (Audio CD)
During the late Fifties/early Sixties Connie Francis was reigning Queen at MGM Records and she must have spent much time within recording studios in order to sustain her world-domination continued at a steady pace. Whether rendering those metallic sounding pop platters or emoting multi-language ballads and cute novelty numbers, there was no stopping Connie, although her hit singles left me somewhat unmoved except when rendered in German. However, with hindsight, I now embrace all her recordings - whether hit singles or album tracks and their reappearance on CD’s makes it possible to appreciate the singer's growing maturity and versatility as she vocally tackles a variety of moods and genres.
Sepia Records now follows up previous Connie Francis releases with this multi-language compilation which ticks all the right international boxes for apart from ten welcome German language recordings headed by DIE LIEBE IST EIN SELTSAMES SPIEL (EVERYBODY‘S SOMEBODYS FOOL), there’s Swedish (PRETTY LITTLE BABY), French (LOVE IS LIKE A VIOLIN and three others), Japanese (VACATION and three others), Spanish (MANY TEARS AGO and two others), Italian (ROMAN GUITAR), Hebrew (HAVA NAGILAH and one other) and Greek (NEVER ON SUNDAY) versions of many of her English hits or songs recorded specially for each country. Through it all, the singer commands attention; whether it be the familiar SOMEONE ELSE’S BOY, WHERE THE BOYS ARE, LA PALOMA, MALAGUENA, LILI MARLEEN or BREAKIN’ IN A BRAND NEW BROKEN HEART rendered in a foreign language but essentially Connie in full pop format but as I always say you don’t need to know the lingo in order to enjoy this kind of music.
Backed up with Sepia’s informative notes, some colourful sleeve reproductions and month/year of recording.
