4.0 out of 5 stars A great return to form, 29 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Saturday (Audio CD)
I'm a long-time OCS fan, but I was a little disappointed with the last two albums. The good news is that Saturday is a great return to form! With every track under four minutes, Saturday is a lively, upbeat album, and most importantly, it sounds like the band is really having fun.

It definitely sounds like OCS, but it's tough to make a direct comparison to their earlier albums. There aren't any standout anthems that I'd call guaranteed singles, like Riverboat or July, and there aren't any epics, like Get Blown Away or When Evil Comes. Although I miss that style a bit, it's not a bad thing that the band are doing things a little differently this time, and the album feels like it's not trying too hard to impress. It's a fun mix of different styles and catchy songs, and it reminds me most of B-sides, Seasides and Freerides.

A few songs are in my favourites already: Mrs Maylie has a fantastic opening that will have you singing for sure, Old Pair of Jeans reminds me of Give Me A Letter but jazzed up to the max, and What's Mine Is Yours has an excellent Beatles vibe.

I'm really enjoying Saturday, and I absolutely recommend it. If, like me, you were a bit disappointed with the last two albums, be sure to give this a try before you write off Ocean Colour Scene.

I'm actually considering changing my review from four to five stars, I can't stop listening to the album. :)

At this point, there's a good chance I've listened to Saturday all the way through more times in the last week than I have On The Leyline since it was released. I'm definitely adding 'Postal' to my list of favourite songs, too!
