Mr Sponge -- a diamond read,
This review is from: Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour (Wordsworth Classics) (Paperback)
This is a forgotten classic, and many potential readers will be put off by the core theme linking the scenes of this novel - fox-hunting. I personally am totally against the sport in the present, and hasten to reassure the potential reader that the novel is not about the sport at all. It is a wonderful portrayal of Regency / Victorian country life depicting all levels of society with a critical and humourous eye.
The hero Mr Sponge, a rogue with an eye to the main chance, tours the fox-hunting shires of England, preying off the characters who at first seek to befriend him and offer accomodation in the hope of advantage to themselves. They find to their cost there is no advantage to be had, but rather that getting rid of this unwanted guest takes a lot of ingenuity and work.
The characters are portrayed with a fresh clarity and vividness that you would dearly love to meet them yoiurself.
A delightful read back to a simpler but no less competitive world of 200 years ago.
