This review is from: Deception: Spies, Lies and How Russia Dupes the West (Hardcover)
As a political scientist and hobby-historian, I thought I knew much about the shady Russian actions in Europe already. Mr Lucas however proved me wrong - the book was perfectly researched, with him putting much effort into contacting relevant people, finding out facts and organising interviews. I think this is one of the best pieces of investigative book-writing that I have ever read.
Not only is he a good researcher, he is a perfect story-teller. I couldn't put the book down.

I beg to differ. The content may well be good, but it is padded out, badly, with generic anti-Russian waffle. Just to be clear, I'm not saying this out of any disagreement with the author's point of view, but just as a (disappointed) reaction to his poor narrative skills. Economist editor or not, he ain't a good writer. There's way too much chaff in there with the wheat.
Possibly that's just the problem: maybe his publishers wanted a 380 page book. But if he only had 120 pages worth of content, his readers would have had reason to thank him for going easy on the un-nutritious stodge.
