Poor quality vinyl lets down Genesis Box Set,
This review is from: 1970-1975 [VINYL] (Vinyl)After a lot of deliberation, I decided to buy this box set - I have all the albums on vinyl anyway and the CDs / SACDs etc. I have hesitated because despite loving the sound of vinyl, these audiophile records can be disappointing...
Firstly, the records themselves do have impurities on them that result in crackles and on The Musical Box, there is a major defect which completely ruins the final quiet passage. You'd have thought that by now, this problem would have been resolved by the manufacturers but obviously not. Anyone really bothered (?) as there is no comeback. Throughout the set there are numerous cracks and pops too. Very disappointing.
As for the sound, this is difficult because in some cases, it is awesome and others terrible. Voices are brilliant, acoustic passages very realistic and the sound is warm. At times though, the bass is woeful and when it gets busy, the sound is just not quite right - there is a lack of cohesiveness. I have a top-end hi fi and listen to a lot of music on vinyl so I know it's not my system at fault.
This is why I am giving the set 2 stars - the mix is inconsistent and the quality of the vinyl poor. A frustrating and expensive outcome for me, the customer and fan.
Finally, on a positive, the album covers and the artwork is superb - I should take my old albums, put them into the new gatefold sleeves and hey presto, a fantastic box set!

Thanks for the note on the vinyl quality--I was debating getting this set but, if the vinyl is not up to par, I will just look for original UK pressings of these on vinyl. Agreed, too, on the mixes--these new mixes are very compressed in comparison to the originals. I was hoping these LPs would have been the original mixes (perhaps taken from better master tapes), but apparently that is not the case. Saved me a few quid not buying these!
