This review is from: Lady Audley's Secret (Kindle Edition)
I read this in stages during a trip abroad and it was a great way to unwind at the end of a day.
Plenty of emotion and melodrama. Perhaps not quite up there with Wilkie Collins, but in the same league, I would say.
Victorian attitudes well on display - to insanity, for instance. Lady Audley herself is an interesting character, who contradicts the usual Victorian association of beauty with goodness (I hope that doesn't spoil the story for anyone who hasn't read the book). Alicia is a particularly well-drawn character.
And of course, it all depends on that standby Victorian plot device - people failing to tell each other vital pieces of information which could have sorted the whole thing out before it got started. But then if they had, there wouldn't have been a story at all!
