I was told at school it was very important not to make sentences too long otherwise they become difficult to read. The first sentence in this book is nearly 7 pages long. Have they changed the rules on writing or is this a trendy new technique used to influence the Booker Prize shortlisters?
OK it is supposed to be the ramblings of someone high on drugs but I suggest if you want to hear someone intoxicated rambling on about nothing that you go round the local pub where you can at least join in.
The good news after the first sentence (the prologue) the book does get better but the bad news is as far as I am concerned it is still unreadable. Looking through most of the reviews it seems to be agreed that this book is hard going. Personally if I want hard going I go to the gym where at least I come away with bulging biceps (in theory) rather than tired eyes and depression.
