This is a bruisingly, brilliantly funny novel about friendship and rivalry, class and money. It's sort of like an Anglo-Saxon Houellebecq; instead of obsessing with sex or religion, the book describes the hilarious, tragically petty levels of status anxiety rippling through British social life. Nick is one of those characters that you can't help watching from behind your fingers, enthralled by his unrelenting prattishness. Great on poker, even better at getting inside people's heads.
